What is the purpose of a shot blasting machine?

Firstly, what is a shot blasting machine?

Shot blasting machines come in multiple variations that range in complexity. The most straightforward being blast pots filled with shot media, to enclosed centrifugal/wheel blasting machines, with sizes ranging from handheld devices to large automated industrial conveyor units.

What is its purpose?

Shot blasting machines utilise abrasive media, propelled under force, to:

  • Remove imperfections and corrosion from the surface which is being treated.
  • Create a textured surface.
  • Prep for coating adhesion, or further processing.
  • To peen components subject to compressive and tensile stress.

How do you use a shot blasting machine?

Before operating a shot blasting machine of any type, perform the necessary daily/weekly/monthly checks before operation. Equipment and facilities should be regularly maintained to reduce risks to health and malfunctions. Operators should be fully trained and competent in using it.

For pneumatic blast pot, operators must wear the appropriate PPE before using the equipment. Helmet respirators connected to a breathing filter, protective overalls, gloves, and footwear must be worn before operating the machinery.

For wheel blast machines; protective eyewear, ear plugs, high-vis, and protective footwear must be worn before operation.

To operate a shot blasting blast pot, start by loading the desired abrasive material into the machine. The machine is then sealed and pressurised with air. When the desired pressure is reached, the operator opens a valve to allow the abrasive material to flow into the blast nozzle. The operator then aims the blast nozzle at the surface that needs to be treated and depresses the Deadman handle located behind the blast nozzle. Upon depression, the abrasive is forcefully ejected from the nozzle under compressed air and impacts the surface at which it is directed.

For wheel blasting machines are a lot more complex to operate than their pneumatic counterparts, however, the essentials are that the operator must ensure that all the variables are correct for the job at hand. These include media size and type, concentration (blast pattern), mix, and basic preventative maintenance.

What types of shot blasting machines are there, and how do I know which one to choose?

Blasting processes can be significantly improved when using the correct machine for the component. Shot blasting machines from Airblast Eurospray range from large conveyor machines for processing plates, sections, angles and pipes, to rotating table machines for blasting smaller pieces. Many of our larger machines are suitable for the shipbuilding and shipyard industries, steel structure companies and machine builders, but the type of machine required is likely to depend on what type of components need to be treated. Our team are more than happy to assist you in your decision making to ensure the best outcome.
